Hero brand? My favorite!

don't let that change your opinion, though. It is a great addition to sauces with roasted meats.

do you like sour cherry preserves? those are also delicious.

Hmm. And I've never heard of Les Comte de Provence! Hero makes very nice fruit jams with lots of fruit chunks in it. I use them a lot to finish a sauce, especially the black cherry and their black and red currant jellies. The black cherry is really nice with a splash of balsamic or sherry vinegar to balance the sweetness. I'll bet that would be really delicious with roast lamb, especially with some fresh mint steeped in it at the end. :drooling:

I actually have never looked to see if Hero makes a sour cherry jam (I make it with ours from the tree). That is really good with veal and chicken dishes.

I keep some Hero Raspberry preserves and Blackberry preserves for mixing into yogurt or spreading on pancakes.

The jars used to be crazy cheap at Sahadi's. They're still a good bargain!

Yeah, they usually run somewhere around $4 in the supermarket, but if you look around you can find small stores that carry them for less. Ocean State Job Lot here has about a dozen flavors and they cost $2.50. Next time you buy some, try their blueberry jam. It's really good mixed into yoghurt.

shallowgal might be familiar with a DC institution on Wisconsin Avenue: Rodmans. It caters to the foreign expat communities and has all sorts of goodies--including jams and jellies--from around the world you can't get elsewhere (at so-so prices). For a town with lots of Jews, it is surprisingly the only place in the District you can get traditional lekvar (eastern Europe fruit butters).

there is a Marshalls in the burbs (and a World Market is next to it). i will check it out next time i am there.

plum lekvar on buttered bread! :drooling:

by the way, we have a ton of Marshall's around here (for some reason) and their food aisles are widely disparate in selection.

What the self-righteous brain-dead whole-food elitists just don't (or won't) understand is, food chemistry labs can create the primary (most important) flavor of just about any fruit you would want, and with outstanding accuracy. Nothing needs to be planted; nothing needs to be harvested/trucked/processed/trucked again/wholesaled/retailed/ect., it's all esters and what-have-you. Simple! (I'm not exactly sure how they do it, but has to be more efficient than doing things the traditional way, and more efficient = ecologically correct.)

As you mention, you don't need sugarcane or other plant-extracted sweeteners, because... chemistry again! to the rescue. Artificial sweeteners are more powerful and don't rot your teeth. Maltitol can even cure your constipation! (Another reason you don't need actual fruit.)

Imagine if all the tracts of prime real estate now covered in fruit tree operations and cane fields could be put to uses we actually *need*, like municipal landfills. We are running out of landfill space in New York City -- we are already exporting our rubbish out of state by barge , and paying other cities to take our waste. This is ridiculous!
