before I finish (1000+ pages!)

I have read quite a few of Fforde's books ~ and meant to comment on them the other day..... I need to check out Shades of Grey , but have the first one of his nursery crime books The Big Over Easy in my pile of DTBs to read.

I really like his Thursday next series. Fascinating concepts there.

Everything he's written is good! My niece turned me on to him, and now I'm a fan for life. She, on the other hand, is obsessed (I think she might have a secret crush on him, too!) She was president of his fan club for a while; was named "official stalker of the year"; drove 3 hours in a snowstorm to go to a book signing; etc.! I have signed copies of his first 2 books thanks to her, as well as a Spec Ops coffee mug signed by Jasper- #7 of 100!

Wonderful book! I am now going back to read his first novel, Echoes from the Dead. I call it a novel because even though it is shelved in my library's mystery section, this one has some holding power that I think puts it into the literature category, as well. Great character development and atmosphere of the unforgiving harshness of a little island off the coast of Sweden.

Currently reading Anathem by Neal Stephenson. His Snowcrash was one of my favorite cyberpunk books back in the day when I actually used to read a lot.

Reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I'm about 50 pages in, and kinda bored and uninterested. I'm considering putting it down.

Has anyone here read it? Is it worth continuing?

I loved it, Sovex. And I thought the beginning was much better than the end.

My mother had the same reaction as you did, and she couldn't/didn't finish it.

I liked it quite a lot as well, but I do recall that it took me a bit to get into. Interestingly, my mother also was not as enamored with it, although she did finish it. :?

Finished "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" last night. Very suspenseful, although the two main characters have no interaction until around page 355! Surprising twist towards the end- this would make a great movie!

Started "Mostly Harmless" by Douglas Adams. Want to recall Adams' style again before reading Eoin Colfer's "And Another Thing."

It IS a movie. Swedish movie in art house theaters right now - 2 1/2 hours. Apparently a US director is considering a US movie as well.

Just started reading this myself - my first Ebook. Forgot I had seen the cover on this thread, but saw the title in a list by Time of the Top 100 novels of the past 100 yrs - high praise indeed (and not sure yet that that's not over-effusive praise) but enjoying this 1/3 through.

I had just finished:

Image

I didn't realise until reading Burgess' prologue that he (being an unknown author at the time) acquiesced to American publishers to drop the final chapter where Alex is older at age 20 looking back. The novel became a hit and Kubrick used the American (not the British) version of the novel for the film thus really perpetuating an ending to the story that Burgess has since denounced. Being older (and not quite the young rebel I once was) I really like the novel as originally intended.

While it was obviously not the same style as Adams, it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. :3.5: I'd think that anyone who read the hitch-hiker series would find it interesting.

I have never been much of a Star Trek fan. I did watch some of Next Generation when it was on, but would be surprised if I have even seen 1/4 of the episodes. This was a pretty good read, even if you have never seen the show (but it probably helps if you are a little familiar with it). Was one of the first celebs to have a net presence in the true sense of the word, a site he still maintains today (http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/). Many of you may have seen him on some of the recent episodes of The Big Bang Theory.

Yes, on that show, Wheaton is Newman to Sheldon's Jerry Seinfeld. He doesn't quite pull it off, IMHO.

Flapper: A Madcap Story of Sex, Style, Celebrity, and the Women Who Made America Modern - Joshua Zeitz

Finally finished this, after starting and stopping it twice. Terrific and engrossing history of the flapper, both real and on screen and the marketing behind both. Made me want to see some of the silent flapper films of the 20s. Anyone have any recos?

I've been reading lots of short stories lately, and burned through a few collections including Nine Stories by J. D. Salinger, After the Quake by Haruki Murakami (I really liked this compared to his other short story collection I read, The Elephant Vanishes), and read half the stories in The Death of Ivan Ilyich and will circle back around for the others later.

Just started Black Swan Green by David Mitchell. Trying to go slow since I have such unrealistic expectations after Cloud Atlas.

Image

Hard to say much just yet, but it definitely shows promise. Not quite as hooking at Cloud Atlas at first, but I expect there will be more depth to the characters as it focus on one story instead of six.
