Louis Couperin (59)
Picked up a bunch of new classical stuff this week, mostly Renaissance and Baroque periods. First is a disc of Harpsichord Suites by Louis Couperin on Naxos, played by Laurence Cummings. Really beautiful sound, played on a period-style instrument.

Alexander Scriabin (47)
Then there's this disc of piano music by Scriabin on Harmonia Mundi, played by Robert Taub. The disc includes Piano Sonatas Nos. 1, 6 & 9 and a couple sets of Preludes. Very cool stuff. The first piano sonata is very clearly written in a late Romantic style, but after that things get a lot more interesting.

Matthias Weckmann (39)
Another Naxos CD here.
Organ Works Volume 2 by a composer I knew nothing about, but decided to pick up on a whim. It's from the Baroque period. I don't find as interesting as Bach's organ music, and the sound of the instrument it's recorded on didn't really strike me like some organs do, but it's pretty nice.

Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (22)
From the Naxos recording of Missa Papae Marcelli, which was discussed a bit in the Renaissance music thread. Sung by the Oxford Camerata, also including the far less popular Missa Aeterna Christi munera. It's my second disc of Palestrina's music, and while I prefer the my other one, by the Westminster Cathedral Choir, this one is very good as well. On an only slightly related note, yesterday I went to see The Rose Ensemble (a local vocal group that mostly does early music) and Voces8 (a young British group that does all kinds of music, including pop and jazz) perform a concert of Italian Renaissance music, including parts of the Missa Papae Marcelli, and it was great!

Johannes Ockeghem (15)
One more Naxos CD here — the Oxford Camerata (the same group from the Palestrina disc mentioned above) doing a program of Ockeghem's Missa L'homme armé and a few motets, a couple of chant pieces, and a Josquin motet.
